Monday again *sigh* Good thing for good tunes to get you through the day! Loving this new song from Grimes called "Go." Her vocals are pretty and ethereal but the beats keep it all grounded.

I have 3 nephews who are each awesome in their individual ways and I love them all! But after 3 boys, you start having the itch to buy tutus and dresses and hair bows. So, you can imagine how excited my entire family was when she arrived. Oh and it was a surprise which made it all the more exciting. Of course the immediate day following her birth I had to go out and buy a lavender blanky, a cute little dress with leggings, and lavender sun glasses. I couldn't help it :)
It was so fun designing these birth announcements. Finally a different color other than blue! I actually started with the envelope liner paper and went from there. I loved the mint and gold polka dot paper and the lavender seemed to compliment it nicely. Of course I had to use a girly script font and just look at that face! Melts my heart. We love you Sienna!
Sometimes you just got to ease into the week. This song was help you do just that. It's beautiful, sad, and hopeful. Not much else to say really. I fell in love with it pretty immediately and hope you do too :)
I posted a sneak peak of these blush ombre watercolor invites a couple weeks ago and I finally got around to printing and taking pictures! I'm obsessed with envelope liners so of course had to include a black and cream chrysanthemum pattern here.
OH and and and I made my own envelope! I didn't have one in the size with the right color I needed so I made one. I know. I'm shocked too. Because even though I consider myself a creative person, crafty is a whole other ball game that I'm not particularly skilled in. I'm like the kid in the outfield picking dandelions without a clue or care in the world, but every once in a while I surprise everyone, including myself, with a decent play. Because I might have to admit that my first run at the cutting and glueing of said envelope, I ended up gluing the wrong sides of the envelope flaps, and then I ended up glueing the open top flap down instead of the bottom one. See? Picking dandelions. Good thing my husband is way more patient and better with glue than I am. He recovered the mess. But I still consider it a team effort.
This design is coming to the shop soon!
So we receive one of those boxes that is full of local, organic, and seasonal produce once a month. Admittedly, I've been pretty underwhelmed with what we had received these past couple of months. But not this month. This month I was pleasantly surprised as we had all sorts of delicious picks like strawberries, avocados, carrots, cute lil baby bok choys, shallots, oranges, and even rhubarb. To be honest, I don't think I knew what rhubarb looked like until now. It basically looks like red celery and feels pretty similar too. I had no idea what to do with it, so naturally I took to Pinterest and found this recipe for rhubarb and gin sorbet. And with our horrid heat lately, it sounded like the perfect thing.
If you're not familiar with rhubarb, it probably sounds weird. But as my parents said, if they didn't know, they might have thought it was a tart raspberry flavor. It's light, creamy, and delicious, and oh-so-easy to make. I put my own slight twist on the recipe I found from Apt. 28 Baking Co.
You can find the recipe below! And don't skip the lime zest and wedge! It really brings it all together for perfect amount of sweet and tartness. And how gorgeous is that color of rhubarb! Especially paired with the lime. So pretty.
Rhubarb and Gin Sorbet
1 cup of sugar (maybe slightly less than a full cup)
1 cup of water
1 Pound of rhubarb, chopped into 1-inch pieces
2 Tablespoons honey
2 Tablespoons gin
In a medium sauce pan dissolve the sugar in the water over medium heat. Once the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is slightly simmering, add in your chopped rhubarb. Cook over medium-high heat for about 8-10 minutes or until rhubarb becomes soft and sort of mushy. Remove from heat and puree mixture either in a blender, or with an immersion blender. Stir in the 2 tablespoons of honey to the mixture and cover and refrigerate until very cold, preferably overnight.
Before you churn, stir in the gin. Churn for about 15-20 minutes and transfer to a container and let freeze for a couple hours before eating.
To serve: Top with homemade whipped cream, some fresh lime zest, and a lime wedge. Enjoy!
Lana Del Rey is back with a new single called "West Coast" and its subdued and quiet sexiness quickly draws you in, as Del Rey never fails to do. Her new album, Ultraviolence, is due out later this year and apparently she has been working on it with The Black Key's Dan Auerbach. Interesting indeed. Looking forward to it. Until then... enjoying the single :)
It's always bittersweet when your non-favorite design is chosen when designing custom work. Well, i should say at first it's bitter because I'm like noooo not that one! I shouldn't even have included it as an option! But then I get over it and find it cool and neat that they saw something in one of the designs that maybe I didn't see or appreciate before. It all works out :)
But what about those non-chosen designs? Sometimes they have run their course, but sometimes I like them too much to go to waste. Here is one of those designs. I liked the softness and prettiness of the blush/ombre watercolor background. I'm usually not a "pink" person but this is understated and balanced out by the classic black typography so it doesn't get overly "girly" - which it could easily do with all the hearts too. The overall effect is a rustic elegance in my opinion.
I'm also sort of in love with this script font too called Cenizas - it has a handwritten feel to it, while still maintaing it's elegance with just the right amount of freedom. I know it might not be everyone's cup of tea but I like the overall feel it conveys.
This is just a digital version of it, but I've already picked out some envelopes and black and cream floral envelope liners that will complete it. The whole set will be posted soon!
The "chosen" design from this wedding invite set will be posted soon as well! :)
You know those days where it all starts wrong and it never really recovers? It just keeps getting worse? Well maybe those things would be no big deal if your day didn't start on a downhill slope. But since you're already rolling, each thing is like a nice little rock to jostle you around once more just when you think you've regained control.
Anywayssss. Days like those is where I need to be saved and distracted by music. This song did just that for me last week. Thank you Tom Odell and remix geniuses.
I was honored with a Libester Award Nomination by my good friend Tiffany over at Tiffany Lane Handmade. She is always an inspiration to me, and not to mention a crafting queen who also creates beautiful handmade cards. Make sure to check her blog out! So as part of the deal, if you're nominated you answer the set of questions below. So here we go!
1. Why do you blog?
Blogging is a great way to share things I've done and interact with others. If I'm being completely honest, it sometimes feels like a necessary evil since I do use it as way to support and keep my portfolio/site updated. However, I always enjoy creating the posts once i sit down to write or craft them. It's fun to browse through past posts in chronological order to be reminded of old projects and fun memories.
2. What’s your favorite past time?
Well, it seems all my free time is spent in the kitchen, but i love to cook and bake, so really no complaints there. I love to paint when I find the time as well, but there's nothing quite like relaxing on the beach with a good book.
3. Do you have any pets? If so, tell me a little about them!
Does my husband's fish tank count? I don't really consider the fish "pets" but we do have a beautiful 50 gallon fresh water tank with all sort of different fish, mini shrimps and snails.
4. If you had the option of going to the desert, ocean, or mountains, which would you choose hands down and what time of year?
Definitely the ocean! We live 5 minutes from the beach and I'm lucky enough to have an ocean view from my desk, but it's still not enough. There's nothing quite like a summer's day at the beach and coming home all salty, tan, and ready for a backyard BBQ.
5. Is blogging your full time gig? If not, what is?
Nope! Maybe someday. But for now, I am art director for a Christian publication called Worship Leader magazine that serves worship teams worldwide. It's a huge blessing to be both artistic AND be able to serve in ministry.
6. Sweet or savory?
Hmm definitely depends on my mood, but if I absolutely had to choose, i would choose savory. I feel like there are a lot more options there. Plus, if we're talking snacks, it's all about the salt for me. Chips and guac anyone?
7. Where did you grow up?
I'm a born and raised Southern California girl. I grew up in the same house my entire life, and um, ironically, living in my parents guest house addition with my husband after moving back home from college. But honestly, it's a great setup and we have zero complaints. Especially when your husband is racking up the doctorate student loans...
8. What is or would be number one on your bucket list?
Hm this is a hard one! I guess, when it comes down to it in the end, I want to raise a loving family and have mini adventures traveling the world and experiencing all sorts of delicious cuisines and drinks.
9. What kind of music do you normally listen to?
I love all types of music - everything from indie folk to pop to rock. It's way too hard to choose but some all time favs and recent loves include Daughter, Death Cab for Cutie, St. Vincent, Florence and the Machine, City and Colour, Regina Spektor, Muse, Joshua James, The Shins, Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey, Lovelife, Broken Bells, Coldplay, Josh Ritter, The National, and I've been known to get down to some Katy Perry.
10. Bright colors or neutral tones?
I love bright, beautiful colors! Designing and painting wouldn't be the same without them. But when it comes to my wardrobe everything seems to be gray soooo yeah.
11. Tell us one thing about yourself your readers don’t already know.
Well I'm a really big nerd at heart. I love playing board games and video games. I will beat you at Mario Kart and have beaten Zelda: The Ocarina of Time at least 3 times on N64. And I'm proud. A little shameful. But mostly proud.
The first of our friends welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world! He is so precious and perfect, and we are so excited for his parents and whole family! I had the honor of creating the lumberjack themed baby shower invites a couple months ago and we used the same elements to create this birth announcement. It's a two-sided announcement featuring a full picture of Porter on one side, and then his name, birth info and a blank space on the other. I thought this blank space was such a great idea - not only does this serve as an announcement, but also as a thank you note from the parents to everyone who blessed them during the shower and during the pregnancy. Genius!
